[15:38:40] hi [15:38:52] hi [15:39:00] how are you doing? [15:39:13] first week of college ;) [15:39:33] was it mainly fun, or immidiatly hard work? [15:39:47] it's okay, but huge campus [15:40:11] usually takes a dozen minutes to walk from building to building [15:40:27] that's pretty normal, even on my uni that was the distance I think [15:40:37] sigh [15:40:50] but we are dutch, we use a bike [15:41:16] I've been to UofT and U of Guelph and neither is as large as this one [15:41:35] I guess yours is a bit larger than our 1,5/1 km campus [15:41:43] yeah one of my friends just bought a bike [15:42:06] http://illinois.edu/map/map.pdf [15:42:13] is this a good moment for you to go over the evaluation? [15:42:18] sure [15:42:55] that's roughly 3x3 km [15:43:03] o.O [15:43:22] I still hate non-metric units [15:43:40] just keep calculating back and forth [15:44:05] do they use metric in exact sciences ? [15:44:12] I don [15:44:15] 't think so [15:44:17] chemistry, engineering etc? [15:44:31] uh [15:44:50] I mean I don't think they test on the conversions [15:45:28] they might still use metric and non-metric [15:45:39] I think chemistry with SI-units might be easier [15:45:47] * zhuyifei1999_ haven't gone through all the HW & tests [15:45:49] :P [15:46:04] yeah, but I don't take chemistry this semester ;) [15:46:06] do you have to do courses like that? [15:46:11] like chemistry? [15:46:24] I have physics [15:46:29] I guess that's a huge difference, the USA they have the first year pretty broad [15:46:40] in the netherlands we went very specific from year 1 [15:46:47] on computer science/AI [15:46:49] well, it's actually because of AP tests [15:46:57] AP? [15:47:14] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Advanced_Placement [15:47:43] tasking some difficult courses in high school and then take the test [15:47:59] and the college give some credit based on the test results [15:48:16] and I got weaver for some basic chemistry courses [15:48:19] hmm, sounds complicated [15:48:36] those school systems always so different everywhere [15:48:41] yeah [15:48:56] I always like the story where somebody got like a 6-7 average in nl-highschool (highest level: VWO) [15:49:00] they went to US collage [15:49:03] college [15:49:08] and they wrote: Grade A student [15:49:34] apparently a 7/10 here is grade A (highest) in the USA [15:50:37] https://infobliss.github.io/gsoc2017/ is the report [15:51:15] anyways, I got PHYS 211 (mechanics with calculus), MATH 231 (calculus II), ECE 120 (electrical and computer engineering (intro?), so far about representations and calculations of signed and unsigned ints), ENG 100 (engineering orientation), ECON 102 (economics, for the required 'general education') [15:51:22] k [15:51:45] The tool is hosted on the Wikimedia Toollabs here. <= toolforge [15:52:51] the rest looks cool to me [15:53:06] although the wall of text... tl;dr [15:53:26] I wanted that wall of text ;) [15:53:35] to see how infobliss evaluated on the process [16:52:27] hi all [16:53:02] I will be travelling home tomorrow, stay there for about a week [16:57:27] congratulations zhuyifei1999_ for acceptance into UIUC [17:00:51] wait a minute; are you about to start as an undergrad? [17:01:04] Or a faculty? [17:54:50] infobliss: ;) [17:56:24] ? [17:56:51] what's the likelihood of each? [17:56:53] :P [17:57:13] P(faculty) ~ 1 [17:57:35] uh [17:57:43] given the level of your expertise [17:57:45] probably I hit the other side :P [17:58:10] really? [17:58:16] that's awesome [17:58:18] well yeah [17:59:42] I gave you a link to https://github.com/SHSIDers/oclubs for reference a long time ago. that was with my high school friends :) [18:00:27] Oh I see [18:00:45] I took that to be a college project [18:01:05] wel, it's probably college-level difficulty anyways [18:01:09] *well [18:01:51] indeed [18:01:58] it's not really a school project though [18:02:22] I wish you do great things in the years to come [18:02:26] thanks [18:02:55] 1999 in your username makes sense now :) [18:03:23] few knows what it means, so please don't tell others without my consent [18:03:33] sure [18:03:49] btw, what do you think of UIUC? [18:04:11] I think it's great [18:04:26] great for what? (just curious) [18:04:34] even though I have not been to US universities [18:04:51] what is the acceptance ratio? [18:05:05] depends on the major [18:05:52] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Illinois_at_Urbana%E2%80%93Champaign#Admissions [18:05:52] what is yours? [18:05:59] computer engineering [18:06:31] ok [18:06:34] it's the best major of uiuc afaik [18:07:01] http://engineering.illinois.edu/academics/rankings.html [18:07:08] nice [18:07:23] uh [18:07:39] ranking is good [18:08:52] I hope that you will learn a lot of maths there [18:09:05] ;) [18:09:10] in fact your programming skills are the best [18:09:25] now get your maths even stronger [18:09:33] well, doing coding for so long... [18:09:46] I am really amazed today [18:11:05] what is your future plan? [18:11:32] I mean do you prefer academics or industry. [18:11:39] industry [18:12:15] I can tell you that you are good to go even today [18:12:24] ;) [18:12:30] sure, but there is a wide range of industry [18:12:57] you mean? [18:13:10] zhuyifei could step into an ok job today [18:13:17] well, getting a deeper understanding of those computer systems is still beneficial [18:13:24] but at uni you learn certain things which will benefit you a lot [18:13:32] both theoretical as well as personally [18:13:45] which will allow for getting some very great jobs [18:14:01] yeah [18:14:06] yeah I was telling him that to learn maths there is no alternative than to do courses in a uni [18:14:17] you can self-study those as well [18:14:32] maths needs discussion [18:14:33] but often that's difficult to focus on [18:14:39] maths is very exact [18:14:41] that's fundamental to get new ideas [18:14:56] is the field which needs the least new ideas [18:15:30] I did some philosophy and psychology courses, there you see discussion [18:15:42] but maths has the most long standing unsolved problems [18:16:09] true, but it's likely an illusion any of us will near the skill level to even understand those [18:16:10] I'm not the sort of person who likes psychology though [18:16:16] philosophy... maybe [18:16:33] I chose AI because it had a bit of everything ;) [18:16:55] true AI is both theory + coding [18:17:26] to be honest I admire the grandeur of maths the most [18:17:27] the most important thing is to stay curious and disciplined [18:17:42] the 2nd I always fail at ;) [18:18:16] zhuyifei1999_ excels there too [18:19:45] btw I must admit that nobody among my peers can imagine an expertise as that of zhuyifei1999_ at his age [18:20:10] don't judge a book by its cover [18:20:13] :P [18:20:23] don't praise him too much into the skies, he will start walking besides his shoes [18:20:23] they will hardly believe me if I tell them about him [18:20:32] lol [18:21:11] keeping development going is always important, you see this with any skill/talent [18:21:21] yeah [18:21:23] on my draughts club you see this as well [18:21:26] indeed [18:21:30] I was always praised for so much talent [18:21:34] and was lazy [18:21:39] all my peers got very good [18:21:41] I got average [18:21:46] draughts club? [18:21:54] international draughts [18:22:06] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_draughts [18:22:33] oh [18:22:36] I haven't played this [18:22:42] it's mainly played in the netherlands and former soviet [18:22:45] I think I saw this a long time ago [18:22:53] also a bit in france and caribean/brazil/africa [18:23:16] there's only 5000 club players in the netherlands, and 10-20k in the worlds [18:23:24] ok [18:23:31] hmm looks something like chess [18:23:37] yep comparable to chess [18:23:52] easier rules [18:23:56] but not less complex [18:24:06] because you can think more steps ahead because of forced plays [18:24:08] I like chess though [18:24:17] but keep losing :P [18:24:19] I can easily think 10 steps ahead [18:24:23] in draughts [18:24:25] and often 20 [18:24:31] and I'm an average player [18:24:37] could be a good problem for AI researchers [18:24:53] from AI perspective it's more complex than chess I believe [18:25:07] oh I only think one or two steps ahead in chess [18:25:09] the complexity is a bit higher [18:25:16] yep in chess 5 steps is a lot [18:25:24] in draughts that same level is 10-20 somewhere [18:27:03] I have played https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_checkers [18:27:23] popular in India [18:28:18] oh ik this [18:28:31] played this long long long time ago [18:28:39] I play a lot of (simple) board games, but only draughts on a more structural bases [18:29:43] I think I always lose in these games :P [18:33:16] you can't be good at everything ;) [18:33:28] yeah right [18:33:39] I also suck in literature :P [18:34:14] well you can do without that [18:34:38] as long as you can write (essays/presentations/clearly) you'll be fine [18:34:43] yeah [18:35:43] hardly people are good at both arts and technology [18:36:01] if you are interested in both you can be [18:36:17] they say left brain is responsible for one and the right for the other [18:36:36] naah that's too generalized [18:37:12] yeah sort of simplified [18:37:44] I am very bad at music [18:38:10] I can't sing a song however I hard try [18:38:24] *hard I try [18:39:49] one of my friends in aerospace engineering can compose music.. [18:40:30] I think many exact students are good with music [18:40:37] that's a talent [18:40:44] rare talent [18:40:44] often it might be a time spend thing which causes one to be only good at one [18:41:51] true [18:42:05] and both are very broad [18:42:21] I mean I know relative to other people a lot about paintings/art/monuments [18:42:28] which is considered arts [18:42:35] but I don't make art myself [18:42:47] unless you call making a nice draughts game art ;) [18:42:55] or writing code art [18:43:02] art is so broad [18:43:28] and not well-defined [18:44:08] When someone is says that the music is nice, it is hard to verify that [19:08:44] maybe we can develop AI to say whether music is nice or not? [19:13:43] may be basvb knows better [19:13:54] think that is being done [19:14:03] there are some general properties [19:14:07] like for a nice picture [19:14:36] lol maybe the future POTY winners can be predicted [19:15:27] estimate what is quality image and what not [19:15:40] I think that is possible to some extent [19:16:12] if there's any next gsoc project for me to mentor it will be a Machine learning (AI) project [19:16:27] than at least I can have a bit more expertise to share on that part
