[05:06:16] One user from our Karavali Wikimedians User Group community is not able to edit the reason is his IP block is blocked by some global admin- : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/20ca0545/file_73912.jpg [05:07:09] I am bureaucrat in Kannada WP and admin in Tulu Wikipedia. I tried to unblock locally this ip for Kannada. This is what I get - : https://tools-static.wmflabs.org/bridgebot/b38632c9/file_73913.jpg [05:07:20] What is happening? [05:39:17] First, that is off-topic for this channel. Second, the block is not a mistake. The IP belongs to a webhost, and it is likely the user is using a VPN. [05:40:50] So the error message that the IP is not globally blocked is wrong? (re @wmtelegram_bot: First, that is off-topic for this channel. Second, the block is not a mistake. The IP belongs to a webhost, and it is l...) [05:44:59] The IP is globally blocked, as part of a range block. [07:17:52] Thanks for confirming. Sounds like a bug to me then. [17:18:54] No, it seems like everything is working as intended here [17:19:35] Maybe the message is a bit confusing but its not outright wrong [17:41:37] What am I missing if the message that the IP is not globally blocked when it _is_ globally locked is not outright wrong? (re @Brian: Maybe the message is a bit confusing but its not outright wrong) [17:42:06] The range is blocked but the ip is not [17:43:38] Maybe it should be considered a bug as that is really confusing, but taken literally the message isn't wrong per se [17:45:01] I guess it also depends if you can unblock an individual ip address in a range or if you can only whitelist the entire range [17:45:49] I didn't even know there was a local whitelist for global blocks [19:28:03] Isn't that splitting hairs though? If the IP is contained in the range and the range is blocked, then for all practical purposes the IP is blocked, no? IMHO it is not so relevant whether it was blocked directly or indirectly (although that extra information would certainly be welcome). (re @Brian: The range is blocked but the ip is not) [19:30:09] I think it depends on if you need to enter the range to do a local unblock or if just entering an IP in the range is sufficient to unblock just that ip in the range. If its the former than the error would make sense. [21:34:29] Sure, in that case it wouldn't be technically incorrect, but it is certainly incomplete and therefore misleading (by giving the impression that the IP is not blocked at all, directly or indirectly)
