[12:23:49] Krinkle: I've just remembered what GlobalWatchlist was, I looked into it the first time I heard of it a few months back [12:24:14] I tried Danny's gadget at the time, which is the ancestor of it and it's really not that bad [12:25:05] it was fine as-is, tbh, so a bit weird to "productionize" a gadget just for the sake of it [12:26:18] but as long as it has sane defaults I think it's fine. I'm sure editors used to open a bunch of tabs to check their watchlists on every wiki they're active on, so they were essentially consuming the same amount of resources on our end over multiple tabs instead of one [12:27:50] it intuitively feels hacky to send API requests to all the domains you're interested in, but it's actually not a terrible solution. no over-engineering required for something only a niche is going to use. and with good defaults and limits it can't do a lot of harm [12:28:24] I haven't looked at the extension yet, but I assume it's still using that approach [12:39:33] https://twitter.com/igrigorik/status/1298374906082545664 where have I seen this tweet before? 🧐 [12:55:08] :)
