[07:08:05] Hey there, I would like to use some data on wikidata, by getting all persons being a "Member of European Parliament" [07:08:11] I found this entity : https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q27169 [07:08:54] But I don't understand how I can get persons from there. Should I use the SAPRQL language ? How to do it automatically (say once a week for updates for example) throught a script ? [07:09:08] (hoping I ask on the proper chan too ;o) ) [07:14:46] ok, seems SPARQL is a solution [07:15:09] but I need to filter answers [08:22:21] ok, it's too hard for me I cant understand how to reach subproperties of property [08:22:55] I listed all "Members of European Parliament" so far, but I can't filter them by start date of their position :o/ [08:41:15] ok, I finally did it but it was not simple. [08:41:27] Problem is that some datas are not relevant :o/ [14:10:26] !admin need an os [14:10:26] Please visit https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/WD:AN [17:54:26] https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Requests_for_permissions/Bot/NPImporterBot Could I get an update on that? Does it contain all the information needed? [18:18:22] hi. [18:19:20] I am trying to understand the standards of notability for inclusion of books in Wikidata. [18:20:18] can any book published for which the existence can be independently verified (e.g. national libraries entries) be included? [19:06:03] thebogdan: See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Notability_(books) [19:06:14] it is similar [19:06:45] scientific journals are different though, I would say [19:08:31] https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Notability generally, this is a good guide for everything [19:11:48] "it can be described using serious and publicly available references" -- but this means that all 39 million books which have a catalog entry in the Library of Congress can be added to Wikidata. [19:12:07] and probably at least as many from European national libraries. [19:13:16] It would need to be covered in multiple reliable, independent sources [19:13:30] that is not enough, in my opinion [19:14:11] so entries in two libraries? [19:18:34] I don't consider a catalog entry to be a "source" as such. Usually three separate reliable sources are needed. If a book is reliable, many critics will talk about it [19:19:02] are you talking about wikipedia or wikidata? [19:19:06] wikidata. [19:19:21] since when did we need three separate sources? [19:19:23] for Wikipedia, the standards are clear and they're much higher. [19:19:46] if there will never be a wikipedia article, why should we have an item? [19:20:04] because data is interesting even without a wikipedia article [19:20:29] yes, but only if the book is notable. Simply being in a library does not seem to be enough to me [19:21:19] if it's in a library, I would expect there to be a whole bunch of ids which could be added for it [19:22:08] of course, ISBNs, LoC IDs for older books, etc. [19:22:45] well, all books have data about them. This doesn't necessarily mean we need an item about every book [19:23:20] but being in the Library of Congress is a whole different thing [19:23:59] in general I would expect books in libraries to be notable and I wouldn't personally delete an item for a book if someone has actually gone to the trouble of adding all the data for it [19:24:26] but what if it's done by a bot getting data from libraries? [19:24:35] agreed. once created with data we might as well keep it [19:25:02] this is more of a discussion of if we should be creating items about a lot of books from LC [19:25:42] a book in LC has a high chance of being notable, but can't exactly be assumed [19:25:47] (and if all these scientific articles are notable, I can't see why books in libraries wouldn't be) [19:26:32] I'd be a bit sceptical about a bot unless it can do things like link authors properly [19:27:03] I don't think they should be created en masse by a bot. [19:27:07] authors can be easily matched, because libraries use name + date of birth/death for identification. [19:27:52] so if it's a book of John Smith, you can tell which John Smith it was. [19:28:38] for entries without these dates, it's risky to create and link entries. [19:30:15] it would be useful to have a tool to make creating book items easier [19:30:41] if there is one, I don't know about it, and creating the items entirely by hand is quite annoying [19:32:14] I was thinking about this when using Calibre and its Wikidata plugin. It can set automatically Wikidata IDs for books in your virtual library. [19:32:41] but the problem is that even books for notable authors (having Wikipedias in multiple languages) are not in Wikidata. [19:33:56] you see, these are the issues worth fixing. Not creating items about little known books. [19:34:25] if there are books in Wikipedia that we don't have, we should try to fix that first and foremost [19:35:34] well, starting with books by authors for which we already have Wikidata entries could be a start. [19:36:01] but my guess is that even if we include only those we'd still reach 10 million books or so. [19:36:38] you think? [19:36:49] in that case, a bot could be useful to fix that [19:37:28] some items are pretty much only serving the purpose of linking projects with very little data [19:51:01] BTW, most books in Wikisource don't have a Wikidata entry.
