[13:13:38] [SemanticWatchlist] JeroenDeDauw pushed 1 new commit to master: http://git.io/N2L2tQ [13:13:38] SemanticWatchlist/master 9447c52 Jeroen De Dauw: Update RELEASE-NOTES [20:08:13] Hi ppl! [20:08:28] Would you care to advice me a little bit? [20:11:27] !ask [20:11:31] hrgs [20:11:46] Tobb: Just ask. If somebody can answer, maybe they will [20:11:51] Ok [20:12:18] I would like to know of the advantages of using SMW against other solutions. [20:12:21] (CR) Foxtrott: [C: 1] Add PHPUnit boostrap [extensions/SemanticForms] - https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/135078 (owner: Mwjames) [20:12:38] Tobb: that depends on the purpose you'd want to use it for [20:12:55] also, you may need to specify the other solutions you're considering [20:13:07] I am leading a probe into technologies for a hvac training center. [20:14:09] We want a platform to cooperate internally and with users. It should functions like a document repository, a knowledge base and an interface for feedback. [20:14:46] I have discovered Mediawiki with SMW and SemanticForms, and I think it is great. [20:15:16] But I think it is best suited for the tech savvy. [20:15:26] sounds about right [20:15:32] Now I am considering other solutions, more like CMS. [20:15:47] you're requesting an awful lot of functionality in those few sentences [20:15:56] Confluence + Wufoo seems like a good combination. [20:16:27] SMW can do just about all you want, but isn't particularly geared towards any of it, except for knowledge base [20:17:04] thus an SMW based solution would always "work, sort of..." [20:17:22] best bang for your buck, but maybe you need to spend more bucks [20:17:53] and/or cobble together multiple partial solutions [20:18:09] With SMW I could make a page for some training equipment, and provide information to instructors and users, and link to other information. I also like the flexible approach to information (document db). Expand as you go. [20:20:14] I have seen an extension to Mediawiki to make it more CMS-like. BlueSpice. How well does this work together with SMW? [20:21:06] don't know that one [20:22:27] I think Mediawiki is great as you learn to use it (a lot of ppl contribute to Wikipedia every day), but I think it might frustrate members of our team who are not very technical. [20:22:30] SMW really is like a Swiss army knife, it can do almost anything - especially as it sits on top of MW. [20:22:46] but you're right, with non-techs it gets harder [20:23:10] mind you, getting a worthwile user-friendly solution will be much much more expensive [20:24:04] I think PHP seems so flimsy, I fear every day that the Mediawiki installation might crash. How stable is it (with SMW), in your opinion. Is it hard to host and make secure? [20:24:51] Have you experience with Wordpress, Joomla or Drupal, Saruman?
