[01:28:07] Hiya folks. [01:28:07] CrystalClear: 2021-03-21 - 22:25:00UTC tell CrystalClear and if you decide on a new username for yourself, please do submit it [01:28:13] I did [01:28:16] I think it was denied. [01:28:26] Along with my new wiki proposal, but thanks bot. [01:28:38] This time it was a personal wiki proposal for how I cope with MS... [01:29:00] are you sure it was denied? [01:29:01] Not quite sure how or why that got denied... So I'd really appreciate some info on that if I can please. [01:29:28] Well, it says "Declined" so I figure that's a yes. [01:29:41] https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:RequestWikiQueue/17299 [01:29:42] [ Wiki requests queue - Miraheze Meta ] - meta.miraheze.org [01:30:31] Also suddenly I cannot log in, password invalid (despite being saved in my password manager). So do the "forgot my password link" and Meta also refuses to accept even this temporary password provided. [01:30:41] So it's looking like I might have gotten blocked too? [01:31:18] Or maybe they were super fast in changing my account this time heheheheh [01:31:48] I think dmehus wants more explanations [01:32:26] although I don't think a lengthy explanation is needed. My personal wiki was approved and I just said I wanted to document things I like (such as demoscene music, obscure games, etc.) [01:32:32] Ah, I would if I could log in [01:32:54] and are you getting a message saying something like "hijack prevention"? [01:33:01] @CrystalClear, yeah, you probably can't login until at least your loginwiki rename is done [01:33:11] which it just finished [01:33:18] but your global rename should be done soon [01:33:26] brb, going to eat supper [01:33:29] Yeah, that was my perception too... a personal wiki is a personal wiki... I wanted to assure that I will keep anything Miraheze related on my meta user page ;) [01:33:46] Great, thanks. [01:34:07] I might have muddied the waters then by doing a forgot password change. [01:34:25] So I can't post a topic outline anywhere on Miraheze at current if it is required. [01:34:37] I can however post it here. [01:34:45] don't worry, you will get the wiki soon [01:35:27] No hijack prevention message [01:35:44] so it's just the renaming thing :) [01:36:22] Yep. Was just getting the "Incorrect username or password entered. Please try again."-- using the password reset email provided pass. [01:37:44] Question, do you guys ever find that Miraheze users post any how-to stuff on their own wikis for later reminder? I'm just thinking that maybe a rule not to do this should be made explicit somewhere so people don't learn about it by stumbling into the mistake of doing it when not allowed. [01:37:55] Making it explicit somewhere could help to prevent that experience. [01:38:42] I know for example that we create our own documentation pages for extensions like DPL3 with examples specific to our own wiki... because most of our users find the manual to be lacking. [01:39:05] It's pretty hard to understand something situated and in-context without doing that. [01:40:04] you can use your wiki any way you want, as long it doesn't violate the TOS :) [01:40:11] Once people get into surrogate template creation and the times when is needed to invoke a dpl call or preferred over {{#dpl:}} for example, the documentation doesn't cover that at all. [01:40:16] so if you want, you can use your wiki as a pseudo blog as well [01:40:19] And is unnecessarily complex [01:40:59] So... I'm at a bit of a loss of understanding I guess. [01:44:33] I could create a personal organizer for what I mentioned earlier... but only if it were a personal wiki... [01:45:03] I guess the sticking point was the subdomain name then. [01:45:53] well, I don't think domains should be extremely descriptive, but I can't do much on this [01:46:42] The impression I got was anything that could any way look like it was even close to being a help resource on miraheze that isn't on Meta isn't allowed, even if it's a personal organizer. [01:47:11] Even if what I planned to outline was a simple aggregation of links, information etc. [01:48:26] Or if it covered info that was not provided in Meta (or written to add or expound on new/novice needs learning needs to scaffold) [01:48:40] But, I'm sure part of this must have been my own misunderstanding... [01:48:46] I'm just not sure which parts [01:49:15] you can. Don't need to worry about every detail on rules :) [01:50:20] just don't post anything like, illegal nsfw content, malware, hate speech, fake news (unless in an ironical way), and you're good to go [01:50:21] I feel strangely like I should accept that, but that I can't accept it unless it comes from dmehus lol [01:51:08] I want to be crystal clear so to speak so I'm not stepping on anyone's toes. [01:51:33] no problem, buddy [01:53:29] <-- gal pal maybe, but buddy works. Apologies, I just have such limited energy I like to know exactly how to play within the rules so I don't waste time inadvertently crossing them. [01:54:05] Plus screwing up feels terrible... so there's that too. [01:54:29] XD [01:55:05] Thanks for the info though, much appreciated. [02:00:18] @CrystalClear, yeah, I'm not concerned about your wiki posting any of that sort of thing. Basically, a personal wiki is fine, but just generally summarize your intended use and scope. Will you use it as a personal blog? If so, what topic(s) will you focus on)? Will you use it for note(s) on specific software packages? If so, which software packages? Will you use it a personal repository of your personal information? If so, that's fine, but do you [02:00:19] want it to be a private wiki? Will it contain your personal todo list/calendar? If so, that's fine. Just describe it like that and that should be fine :) [02:00:22] does that make sense? [02:00:53] Okay, so I see my scope is unclear despite listing some topics. [02:01:05] Or maybe you'd like it minimized [02:01:15] Purpose for: How I cope positively living in a technical world with some pretty major communications, physical, cognitive and sensory processing problems. Specific topics will include various MS-related problems and coping strategies I found interesting or helpful, the difficulties I find I have with people and situations because of accessibility [02:01:16] issues, how I work around these. [02:01:30] There are several topics listed in those sentences. [02:01:40] You require more of an outline from me? [02:02:05] Oh, I thought that was your reason for how you selected your username? [02:02:21] you are actually going to blog and write about those sort of things? [02:02:31] Ah, i see. Apologies I thought it was clear from the blog title "The Tilted Ways I Cope with MS" [02:02:33] if so, yeah, that's great. Just put that in and I'll approve it [02:02:56] Sort of like a blog... [02:03:05] yeah a wiki version of it [02:03:16] not exactly a "blog" in the traditional blog sense [02:03:25] I actually run across people all the time that ask me to put this stuff somewhere but I'd rather have more of an mix of a personal and education bent in there. [02:03:34] it's like a diary / repository / catalogue related to that basically [02:03:49] Pretty much yep. And, I do work in tech, so I will have some of it in there. [02:03:50] that sounds good [02:04:24] I tend to cite too much to run anything as a blog lol [02:04:27] but talking about extensions we could definitely work on better documentation for some, on MW.org [02:04:40] although I never used even half of the entire list :p [02:05:37] I find most of the docs on MW.org to be pretty good [02:06:25] The ones that link off to other places, sometimes not as much. DPL is complex one but so many people shy away from it because the off-site docs are intimidating. [02:07:10] Cargo is awesome but assumes a fair bit of prior knowledge (which is totally expected) but new/novice users come to stuff like that and get lost easily too. [02:07:32] Sometimes it's a simple as providing a SQL statement tutorial to help newbies get the basics. [02:07:45] Then they're off and running [02:07:57] Yeah, you could include some MediaWiki documentation in your wiki's purpose, that'd be fine [02:08:13] especially if you describe how you'd improve upon the documentation [02:08:18] that would be useful [02:08:36] We do have a Chinese language fork of MediaWiki.org that we host actually, so that would be fine [02:09:12] I wonder how many actual mainland China wikis we have [02:09:25] considering miraheze is blocked there [02:16:04] Is Category:"Community" and Purpose:"None of the above" sufficient for categorization? I don't really see anything that would work for an educational-style repo or catalog for human-interest type things. [02:16:56] I struggle with categorization because I know that wikis often start small and with narrow aims and often grow and expand it organic ways. [02:17:35] Community didn't quite make sense at first, but I can see how it fits now. [02:25:33] Ah shoot, sorry I didn't see the part about " add to, but do not replace" your existing description. Sorry dmehus [02:26:33] CrystalClear, that's perfect. Approved. Your wiki should be created shortly. [02:26:44] It's been sent to the jobrunner. [02:26:55] In your case, that is totally fine. I think starting fresh was best [02:27:02] we should have a wiki showcase btw [02:27:09] Thanks [02:27:34] np [02:28:05] CrystalClear, you can also add a custom domain for your wiki if you want. Not sure if you knew that, but see [[custom domains]] for an explanation of the steps involved [02:28:47] Yeah I did see that thanks. It's another reason I was suggesting to my friend that if I no longer maintain his independent wiki for him someday he move it to Miraheze. [02:29:17] We managed to get the game developer to link to us direct in-game so keeping the domain for them is pretty important. For me not so much. [02:29:49] yeah [02:36:56] CrystalClear, did you see there is a TiltedCerebellum user on Miraheze? [02:37:18] Yep, logged in. Thanks! [02:38:01] Oh, that's great you were able to log in. Now you can work on your wiki. Sounds like it's a bit of a rabbit hole indeed and will give you lots to write about. :) [02:38:37] yeah, it's a topic I've been putting off for far too long lol. [02:39:03] Because: Rabbit hole. ;) [02:39:35] Time to grab some later dinner anyhow. Thanks folks. [07:53:44] Hello TiltedCerebrum! If you have any questions, feel free to ask and someone should answer soon. [07:54:55] Question, is it possible for users to have $wgAllowSiteCSSOnRestrictedPages = true; set for their wikis so that users don't have a completely inconsistent theme experience using pivot theme? [07:56:09] So for example between any page regular page such as https://tiltedcerebrum.miraheze.org/wiki/Main_Page [07:56:09] [ Tilted Ways of Coping with MS ] - tiltedcerebrum.miraheze.org [07:57:04] Versus the user preferences or login page which without that setting which defaults to the normal theme colors? [07:57:48] And incidentally shows the broken echo notifications icons tee hee [07:58:00] Which I fixed in my version, because why not. [07:59:38] Or, is there some other way that CSS is required to be worked with in order to make this happen other than using the normal skin override css page, MediaWiki:Pivot.css? [08:03:31] I see there was a phab task for $wgAllowSiteCSSOnRestrictedPages having issues in back in 2014/5 on versions 1.19.20, 1.22.12 and 1.23.5 but resolved in 1.27 and newer.. so just wondering if there was another reason for not having it enabled? [08:30:53] Hello TiltedCerebrum16! If you have any questions, feel free to ask and someone should answer soon. [08:32:03] Hello TiltedCerebrum41! If you have any questions, feel free to ask and someone should answer soon. [08:32:15] Darn it, forgot I was still connected lol [11:49:11] .tell TiltedCerebrum1 Generally speaking, no `$wgAllowSiteCSSOnRestrictedPages` isn't enabled on specific wikis for mainly security reasons as this would allow code to be executed on special pages that authenticate user credentials. Your best bet would be to develop a custom skin for your wiki, and submit your skin for approval on Miraheze, as it would undergo a security review. That's what Universal_Omega did. See also Southparkfan's response to [11:49:11] a user who had this question recently, https://meta.miraheze.org/w/index.php?title=User_talk:Southparkfan&diff=166793&oldid=166780&diffmode=source [11:49:11] dmehus: I'll pass that on when TiltedCerebrum1 is around. [12:21:12] ty, BurningPrincess1 [12:21:21] I wish I had real hot chocolate actually [12:22:47] * dmehus contemplated raiding RhinosF1's luxury hot chocolate stash, but that would make it the most expensive hot chocolate ever as it would require a transcontinental flight and two-week COVID-19 travel quarantine (there and back) [12:23:24] dmehus, where do you live? [13:06:29] BurningPrincess1, west coast of Canada [13:06:45] I live in the UK dmehus [13:07:02] well, westernmost province of Canada, rather. Not exactly the "coast" since I'm inland heh [13:07:18] BurningPrincess1, oh, cool, I thought you were in the US midwest somewhere :P [13:07:38] :) [13:07:55] dmehus, my wiki only has 450 pages, and most of those are under 1000 words [13:08:09] ok [14:19:08] dmehus, getting wiki lore witten costs me a lot of money, even though I pay the bare minum for it [14:19:20] When I imported this template onto my wiki: https://princesspictures.miraheze.org/wiki/Template:Coord I encountered this error: Lua error in Module:Coordinates at line 742: attempt to call local 'coordinates' (a table value). How do I fix it? [14:19:21] [ Template:Coord - Princess Pictures Wiki ] - princesspictures.miraheze.org [17:28:44] guys, so, I noticed this a while ago, but I didn't care too much, but [17:29:06] when I used TimedMediaHandler in the past, with audio files, the audio played in the player itself (with the progress bar etc.) [17:29:21] but now it launches a modal (kinda like a video) with the audio [17:29:56] is there a way to revert to the way it was before? I don't really see much point on opening a modal to listen to 2s of audio [18:37:39] Hello! [18:37:48] Can I have a cloak please? [18:37:50] Hi WikiJS [18:38:04] JohnLewis: ^ [18:38:15] ? [18:38:53] JohnLewis handles cloaks [18:40:28] How does IRC work? [18:40:34] I kinda am confused. [18:40:39] It's just a text based chat [18:41:03] Like discord-ish? [18:41:13] Ye [18:43:14] Okay [18:43:28] I used NickServ but I don’t have a cloak. [18:43:53] Yeah cloaks aren't automatic on freenode [18:44:03] Now you do [18:44:14] You have a shiny one now [18:44:29] Yes, thank you. [18:48:32] I have a beautiful cloak lol [18:52:25] Is there a way to let people know about who I am with a cloak? [18:52:41] Like on Meta? [18:52:44] Your cloak shows your Miraheze username [18:53:18] Oh true [18:54:08] How do I put a ‘User chats on IRC as’ userbox on meta? [18:56:23] hm yes, my real name is webchat.freenode [18:56:34] Very unique [18:57:19] WikiJS: [18:57:33] I don't know what our Irc user box is called [18:57:56] I think I figured it out. [18:58:13] oh, already had it. [19:01:35] Can I have a cloak please? [19:02:00] How do I get a real name [19:02:14] IDK, ask in #freenode [19:04:49] I said hey [19:04:52] what’s going on [19:06:31] WikiJS: look in the settings menu [19:06:37] It might be fixed though for Kiwi [19:07:02] I went onto #freenode, and webchat doesn’t have that feature :/ [19:11:02] Oml [19:11:10] Freenode be like [19:11:25] Crashing my web browser [19:11:49] BurningPrincess1, is your nickname registered with NickServ? [19:11:53] Yo my cloak cloaked [19:12:51] Yes [19:13:14] JohnLewis, ^ can you request a cloak for BurningPrincess1 when you get a chance? [19:15:52] Upside down question mark be like ¿ [19:15:59] BurningPrincess1: do you mean like https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:NewPages [19:16:00] [ New pages - Miraheze Meta ] - meta.miraheze.org [19:16:26] Yes, but I had tobel intergrating that into the main page as it had a huge ugly thing [19:17:33] BurningPrincess1: maybe in 2 steps. first step, get RSS/Atom feed of new pages, second step, use RSS extension to include feeds in random pages [19:17:57] but it's not a default feature to inlude Special pages in other pages [19:18:01] I thought RSS was dead. [19:18:28] WikiJs, I've done it, but have encountered an issue. You can follow along in #miraheze-sre [19:18:34] no, Atom is alive and well, example en.planet.wikimedia.org/ or any MediaWiki RC feed [19:18:45] also several extensions to create and include feeds [19:18:48] Alright Dmehus. [19:18:58] mutante, yeah, exactly [19:19:01] mutante, how would I do all that? [19:21:11] BurningPrincess1: let me start here, the example special page, which you can open on any wiki, right: https://meta.miraheze.org/wiki/Special:NewPages [19:21:14] [ New pages - Miraheze Meta ] - meta.miraheze.org [19:21:22] then if you look at the source code of that, the HTML source [19:21:27] you can find this kind of stuff: [19:21:48] link rel="alternate" type="application/atom+xml" title=""Special:NewPages" Atom feed" href="/w/index.php?title=Special:NewPages&feed=atom&hideredirs=1&limit=50&offset=&namespace=0&username=&tagfilter=&size-mode=max&size=0"/> [19:21:52] [19:21:55] that is line 28 and 29 [19:22:05] that gives you URLs in RSS/Atom/feed format [19:22:09] that any feed reader can read [19:22:53] next step after that is to check list of Mediawiki RSS extensions that can _include_ feeds on random pages.. you can check the extension categories on mediawiki.org [19:23:06] finally you create a ticket with miraheze and ask them to install that extension [19:23:35] and if they approve that you can hopefully use it by just putting some special tag on your main page [19:24:25] This is too complex [19:24:42] https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:RSS_extensions [19:24:43] [ Category:RSS extensions - MediaWiki ] - www.mediawiki.org [19:24:58] well, in that case the answer is.. it's impossible and I tried [19:25:25] it really is just asking them nicely to install this thing though [19:25:26] and then use it [19:25:34] At the mo, I have fetreed pages on my wiki I update by hand [19:26:34] just link from the main page to Special:Newpages [19:26:39] that's easy, right [19:26:54] you just don't get the inclusion of content from another page [19:27:15] but the list of new pages that gets automatically updated..it's all there [19:27:20] no need to manually make a list [19:36:46] Odd, its only showing the main page [19:37:20] Find some code to put the new pages feed into the page, but only snows the main page on ,my wiki [19:38:19] Neat: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Help:Special_page#Links_to_special_pages - I found this [19:38:20] [ Help:Special page - Meta ] - meta.wikimedia.org [19:40:17] BurningPrincess1: yes, that is a good find, that's what I meant [19:40:33] It looks so neat [19:40:38] and if you want to you can customize your menu sidebar on the left [19:40:42] and put custom links there [19:41:17] Somehow, it fitted into the "collum" with a pic I have on my wiki [19:48:29] I put stuff in tables to make it look neater as well [20:09:05] Yes [23:29:20] Hello j93! If you have any questions, feel free to ask and someone should answer soon. [23:31:37] Universal_Omega: what do you think about https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:ShowMe? [23:31:37] [ Extension:ShowMe - MediaWiki ] - www.mediawiki.org [23:31:52] seems very simple, I was thinking about requesting it as well [23:32:39] @Lake: I'm busy right now, but looking really quickly. [23:37:50] @Lake: on initial look, good chance that'll be declined for security reason, I noticed. [23:38:18] But it'd need looked at more to be certain. [23:39:55] hmm, dropdowns causing security issues? [23:48:21] There is one thing I noticed, may be nothing, but just possibly.
